Week Three – Expressing Through the Elements

Look deep into nature,
and then you will understand everything better.

-Albert Einstein

Welcome to Week Three of the Writing Dance

Our writing practice this week is called, Un-naming.  In our time together, we will invite an item from nature, and the elements of earth, wind, air or water to draw us into a time of writing that engages us creatively with the wisdom of the natural world.  Through this practice, we may discover that a poem, a blessing or a prayer naturally emerges.

Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature.
It will never fail you.

-Frank Lloyd Wright

The Writing Practice

The writing practice we will be exploring this week helps us experience nature through our senses.  We will see nature with new eyes by lifting the usual labels that we use to name aspects of natural world.  As we lift the labels, something new is revealed that gives us fresh, descriptive language to express our deeper connection to the world within and around us.

Words of Inspiration

Mark Nepo is a poet and author who is inspired by nature.  Here is a link to an interview he did with Tami Simon from Sounds True.  His writing process connects to our writing practice today.

“To walk quietly until the miracle in everything speaks is poetry, whether we write it down or not.”
Mark Nepo

In Closing

I hope that you have enjoyed this writing practice and that you discovered a treasure waiting for you as you worked with it.  May you come back to this practice whenever you need to mine the gold from your experiences in nature.

Many blessings,
Kathy
